Walking Track Upgrades for GAA, Soccer & Rugby Clubs

Funding is available to GAA, soccer and rugby clubs across Ireland to improve existing walking tracks and create safer, more accessible opportunities for physical activity in their local communities.

Three separate Healthy Ireland-supported funding programmes are currently open for applications, providing financial support for clubs looking to upgrade existing walking facilities.

The funding can support improvements such as resurfacing, accessibility upgrades and lighting, helping clubs make better use of their facilities and provide a safe space for members and the wider community to walk and exercise.

GAA Clubs – €500,000 Walking Track Upgrade Programme

The GAA, in partnership with Healthy Ireland, has launched Phase 3 of the Healthy Ireland Walking Track Upgrade Programme, with €500,000 available to support GAA clubs.

The programme is open to clubs in the 26 counties and is focused on upgrading existing walking tracks. Previous phases have supported 102 clubs across 26 counties.

Funding can help clubs improve walking facilities through measures such as:

  • Improving or upgrading existing track surfaces
  • Increasing accessibility for people with mobility issues and wheelchair users
  • Installing or upgrading lighting
  • Creating safer and more accessible walking facilities for people of all ages and abilities
  • Supporting greater use of club facilities by the wider community

The GAA says previous phases have resulted in increased use of walking tracks, including increased participation among people with mobility issues. Upgraded facilities have also helped clubs engage with schools, older people’s groups, care homes, community organisations and local residents.

Applications are being managed through the GAA’s Phase 3 Expression of Interest process.

The Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), in partnership with Healthy Ireland, is also providing funding for rugby clubs in the 26 counties to upgrade existing walking tracks.

Funding can support projects including:

Funding is available in grants of up to €10,000 or €20,000, depending on the scope of the proposed work and the benefits it will provide to the local community.

Particular consideration will be given to projects that:

  • Provide a safe, car-free place to walk where one is not otherwise available locally
  • Improve access for wheelchair users, people with mobility issues and those using buggies
