Climate Action Plan 2025 Progress Update

Climate action is embedded as a cross-sectoral priority within the Corporate Plan and is integrated into the full suite of policies, strategies and operational plans prepared by Waterford City and County Council. The report for Climate Action for the year 2025 is now available.

Some key highlights:

💡10,000 public lights upgraded to LED. Over 60% energy savings achieved from lighting upgrades.
🏠Over 400 social homes retrofitted since 2021 to B2 BER. Approx. 300 tonnes of CO2 saved each year. Major public buildings set for decarbonisation including Splashworld, City Hall and libraries
🏢More than 1,500 businesses signed up to a climate pledge. Businesses committing to actions to cut emissions and improve sustainability
👥17 community climate projects delivered in 2025. Projects include renewable energy, biodiversity, composting and active travel supports
🚗Council fleet: nearly 17 new electric vehicles added to the fleet. 80 vehicles now using HVO fuel, reducing emissions by up to 90%. Expansion of EV charging points at Council depots
✅Continued investment in projects like transport hubs, rain gardens and community funding
