In celebration of National Biodiversity Week, the Waterford Bicycle Users Group (WBUG) is delighted to announce a free, family-friendly guided cycle taking place on the Waterford Greenway on Saturday the 23rd of May. This event offers a unique opportunity for local residents and visitors to Waterford to explore the rich natural and archeological heritage of the Greenway while enjoying a leisurely group cycle.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, 23rd of May, departing at 2:00 pm from the Carriganore carpark. Designed to be accessible for all ages and abilities, the guided cycle will last approximately 90 minutes. Participants will travel through some of the most scenic sections of the Greenway, focusing on the diverse flora and fauna along this dedicated cycling corridor.
To celebrate National Biodiversity Week, WBUG has teamed up with B-Corridor, a local biodiversity group from the Dunmore Road area of Waterford City dedicated to creating and preserving pollinator-friendly habitats within the community for this event. Brian Jacob, a volunteer with B-Corridor, will share insights into the importance of local ecosystems and provide practical tips on how people can support biodiversity in their gardens and neighbourhoods.
“We are thrilled to combine the joy of cycling with an extra focus on our local environment,” said a spokesperson for the Waterford Bicycle Users Group. “Partnering with groups like B-Corridor allows us to highlight the vital role that green infrastructure, such as the Waterford Greenway, plays in supporting both human well-being and natural biodiversity.”
The event is supported by the Irish Cycling Campaign and National Biodiversity Week. Following the cycle, light refreshments will be provided for all participants, offering a chance for the community to gather and discuss the day’s activities and future plans.
Participation is free of charge, and no prior registration is required. WBUG encourages families and individuals to bring their bicycles and join this communal effort to appreciate and celebrate Waterford’s natural beauty.
