Community groups across the South East have a new opportunity to secure funding for local projects, as the Great Island Community Fund has officially reopened for 2026.
This fund, delivered by SSE Thermal and linked to the Great Island Power Station in County Wexford, is designed to support grassroots initiatives that make a real difference in local communities. With €25,000 available annually, it offers a valuable funding stream for community and voluntary groups working to improve their local area.
What is the Great Island Community Fund?
The Great Island Community Fund provides financial support to community and voluntary organisations located near the power station, particularly in the areas of Great Island, Campile and Cheekpoint.
The aim of the fund is simple: to invest in projects that enhance local life, strengthen community connections, and support sustainable development.
Each year, a total of €25,000 is made available, with grants typically ranging between €4,000 and €6,000 per project. ()
Who Can Apply?
The fund is open to:
- Community and voluntary groups
- Non-profit organisations
- Registered charities
Groups do not need to be a registered charity, but they must be formally constituted (with a governing document) and operate on a not-for-profit basis. ()
What Projects Are Supported?
Applications are prioritised based on local needs identified through community consultation. Projects that fall into the following themes are particularly encouraged:
- Biodiversity and environmental improvements
(e.g. community gardens, habitat enhancement, parks and play areas) - Community services and participation
(e.g. local clubs, events, activities, and initiatives supporting inclusion – including female participation in sport) - Energy efficiency and sustainability
(e.g. projects that reduce energy use or promote environmental awareness) ()
Key Dates for 2026
- Applications Open: Tuesday 14 April 2026
- Applications Close: Tuesday 9 June 2026
- Funding Decisions: Expected from July 2026
If the full allocation is not awarded, a second funding round may take place later in the year.
How Are Decisions Made?
Funding decisions are made by a local panel, ensuring transparency and community input. The panel includes:
- SSE Thermal representatives
- Local authority representatives
- Members connected to the local power station
This approach ensures funding reflects real community priorities and needs. ()
