Community groups and Trail Management Organisations across County Waterford are invited to express their interest in the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) 2026/2027, with Waterford City and County Council now accepting applications.
The Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS) supports the development, enhancement, repair and promotion of outdoor recreation facilities in rural areas. The scheme aims to encourage healthy, active lifestyles while also boosting local tourism and supporting communities to make the most of their natural surroundings.
Outdoor recreation includes activities such as walking, hiking, cycling, kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking, orienteering and open water swimming. Funding is available for projects that improve access to these activities and create high-quality recreational amenities for both local communities and visitors.
Funding Available
The 2026/2027 scheme includes four funding measures:
- Measure 1 – Small-scale repairs, development, promotion and marketing (up to €40,000)
- Measure 2 – Medium-scale repairs, upgrades and new trail or amenity developments (up to €200,000)
- Measure 3 – Large-scale strategic trail and amenity developments (up to €500,000)
- Project Development Measure – Funding to help develop projects for future Measure 2 or Measure 3 applications (up to €50,000)
Projects submitted should align with the Waterford Outdoor Recreation Plan 2026–2030 and contribute to improving outdoor recreation opportunities across rural Waterford.
Groups interested in applying can learn more about the scheme and submit an Expression of Interest through the Waterford City and County Council website.
The closing date for Expressions of Interest is 5:00pm on Monday, 13 July 2026. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
If your group has an idea for an outdoor recreation project but is unsure whether it is eligible, Waterford City and County Council encourages applicants to get in touch for advice before submitting their Expression of Interest.
